Free (important) stuff for new moms: lactation support!

This isn’t exactly new news, but most of the people we know are still unaware that:

As of August 1, 2012, health insurance companies must cover breastfeeding support and supplies.

Yes, you read that right!  The Affordable Care Act requires insurers to provide—at no cost—“comprehensive lactation support and counseling, by a trained provider during pregnancy and/or in the postpartum period, and costs for renting breastfeeding equipment.”

The caveat is that some insurance plans have been grandfathered in and don’t have to comply, and others may require you to jump through some hoops  to approve a lactation consultant’s services or get a pump at no cost (like ordering directly from them).

Your best bet: give your insurance company a call and find out what you’re eligible for.  (Make sure you have your insurance ID numbers handy.)
