weeLove: The Monitor That Eases New Parent Nerves

A (Really) Smart Sock Monitor

New parents are notorious for being wide-awake in the wee hours of the night, even when their baby is sound asleep. Why? Because we’re busy hovering over our little one as he snoozes. Instead of monitoring his every breath (which can be really hard to do in the dark), let an actual monitor keep tabs so you can get some much-needed shut-eye.

The Owlet Smart Sock fits on your baby’s foot and monitors heart rate and oxygen levels while he sleeps. Using the same technology hospitals use (pulse oximetry), it safely connects via Bluetooth to a base station and your smartphone, alerting you if your child stops breathing or if heart rate or oxygen levels are out of normal range. The Base Station will sound an alarm and flash red. If you’re using the app, you’ll get a visual message with an audible alert as well. In addition, the app has an amazing platform to it called Connected Care which helps you see trends or changes in your babies sleep patterns and breathing levels, as well as store that data for you to see later. This can help early detection of health problems or even of an illness.

This “smart” organic cotton sock is hypoallergenic, latex-free, and has a Velcro strap for a snug fit. You’ll receive three sizes so you can keep using Owlet as your baby grows. Powered by a coin cell rechargeable battery (the same type as your watch), you’ll never have to worry about swapping out batteries. Just be sure to re-charge daily. (They’ve conducted over 100,000 hours of testing and exceed all safety requirements, including the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.)

Your baby needs you on your A-game. So put those nerves to rest… and get some rest too.

This is a must have for every new parent! My husband found out about it when I was pregnant with our son. I remember getting the link via text while I was eating lunch at school (I teach). I was taken back by how expensive it was and totally wrote it off as something we didn’t need/couldn’t afford. Flash forward to a few months later, our son was only a couple weeks old and had severe reflux. He was up most of the night and day. I was sleep deprived, but any time he actually fell asleep, I would stare at his chest to make sure he was still breathing. If I did fall asleep, I would wake up in a panic, checking to make sure he was still okay. After my husband got tired of waking up to see me staring at him for no good reason in the middle of the night, he ordered the Owlet for my Mother’s Day gift. We used it for around 18 months until our son started climbing out of his crib and coming to our room while still wearing it. Haha. It is not on my Pinterest board for Mommy Must-Haves!
